'Paca-Facts
  • Alpacas originate from the Andes Mountain regions in South America and are in the “camelid” family along with camels, llamas and vicuña.
  • There are two types of alpacas:  Huacayas (pronounced wa-ky-a) and Suris.
  • Suris have long, elegant draped locks while Huacayas have a crimpy, puffy fiber that gives them a teddy bear appearance.
  • Suris represent only 10% of all alpacas in existence
  • Alpacas have only one baby at a time, called a cria (pronounced cree-ah)
  • Gestation takes 11 to 11 1/2 months
  • Alpacas make great pets, are generally easy to care for and are good with kids
  • Alpacas are very shy animals and they like to be with other alpacas in order to feel secure and happy.
  • Alpacas eat grass and dry hay and require only a little pasture for grazing.
  • Alpacas do quite well at a stocking rate of 5 to 6 per acre of pasture.
  • Alpaca fiber is considered a luxury fiber like cashmere and comes in more natural colors than any other on earth.
  • Alpaca fiber is lighter, warmer and stronger than the finest wool.
  • There are approximately 60,000 registered alpacas in the United States.
